The Henry Smith Foundation has launched a new £6 million Enterprise Gateway Fund to help small charities, community organisations and social entrepreneurs develop income-generating activities and become more financially sustainable.
The three-year programme will be delivered through at least four intermediary organisations, which will distribute grants of up to £40,000 alongside practical business development support.
Priority themes
The Foundation is seeking intermediary organisations capable of delivering grants, enterprise development support, training, networking and peer learning opportunities.
The programme will support smaller organisations and social entrepreneurs working in three priority areas:
- Getting Started: Helping families give young children a strong start in life.
- Building Independence: Supporting young people to move into adulthood with confidence and skills.
- Safer Futures: Helping people rebuild their lives following abuse, displacement or imprisonment.
Priority will be given to communities and areas that have traditionally had limited access to enterprise funding and support.
Eligibility and exclusions
Applications are currently invited from organisations seeking to become intermediary partners, rather than individual charities or community groups seeking project funding.
Applicants must have an annual income of at least £500,000, experience of managing grant programmes and a proven track record of supporting enterprise development.
Organisations do not need to operate nationally. Applications are welcomed from those working within particular geographical areas or communities.
Smaller charities, CICs and community organisations cannot apply directly at this stage. They will be able to access grants and support through the appointed intermediary partners once the programme is established.
Deadlines
Expressions of Interest close at 5pm on 25 November 2026.
Shortlisted organisations will be invited to submit full applications by 22 January 2027. Funding decisions are expected in April 2027.
Application process
Applications involve an initial online eligibility check and Expression of Interest, followed by a full application for shortlisted organisations.
Tips for applicants
Applicants should demonstrate their experience of helping smaller organisations develop sustainable trading activities, alongside robust grant management arrangements.
The Foundation is particularly interested in organisations with strong local networks and the ability to reach communities that have traditionally been underserved by enterprise support.
