Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation

The Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation is an independent grant-making charity. Funds are given to charities registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales within a set of carefully considered guidelines. They do not support individuals or overseas projects.

Grants are awarded to those specifically applying for assistance towards a capital project: new build, major refurbishment, equipment or transport. Please note that only fund capital projects and running costs which include salaries, are not funded.

The Foundation supports charitable projects in the following areas:

Grants are from £1,000 upwards and the majority of grants awarded are under £5,000. Grants are normally a small proportion of your total budget or shortfall. Projects with a total budget of under £5,000 should not apply for a grant. This is because the Foundation rarely funds a significant proportion of a project.

I am writing to request a grant of £4941 to start a new and exciting community group on the Isle of Sheppey that will teach sign language to residents and promote social inclusion. The grant will cover the costs of renting a venue and providing a safe and welcoming environment for our vulnerable members.
The aim of the group is to invite people from different backgrounds and abilities to come together, enjoy music, make friends, boost their self-esteem, confidence and communication skills, and learn sign language as a new and useful way to express themselves. The group will also offer peer support The group will start in July 2023 as a pilot project, with the hope of expanding to other areas in the and opportunities for community engagement.
struggle in today’s society. I am also a qualified AET trainer with 4 years of experience working with future. I am a level 3 qualified signer who has a severe hearing disability and knows what it’s like to the deprived community of the island. I have seen how sign language can benefit people from various walks of life, not just the hard of hearing and deaf.
I have received support from local counsellors, charities and other organisations who have expressed interest in collaborating with me. I have also conducted an assessment report that shows the need and demand for such a group on the island. I have previously established a similar group in Warden with a starting cost of £5536, which was successful and well-received by the participants.
