Comic Relief – Cwtch Communities (WALES)

The Comic Relief Cwtch Communities programme is a Wales-focused fund designed to support small, grassroots organisations helping people facing poverty, hardship and social injustice. “Cwtch” – meaning a safe, warm place – reflects the programme’s emphasis on creating supportive, inclusive community spaces.

The fund prioritises organisations working with people experiencing economic disadvantage, poor mental health, isolation, or barriers to opportunity. It is particularly interested in projects that provide holistic, person-centred support, helping individuals build resilience, confidence and stronger connections within their communities.

Grants typically range from £1,000 to £10,000, making this an accessible opportunity for smaller organisations or those looking to test or grow community-based activities. Funding is often flexible and can support core costs, small-scale delivery, and capacity building.

The programme is open to small charities and community groups in Wales, including those with incomes under around £250,000. In some cases, constituted groups without formal charitable status may also be eligible, making it more inclusive than many traditional funders.

There are usually set application windows, often delivered in partnership with local infrastructure organisations across Wales, so timelines can vary slightly by region.

To be competitive, applications should clearly demonstrate:

  • A strong understanding of local need
  • How the project will create a safe, supportive space (a “cwtch”)
  • The difference it will make in people’s lives
  • How the community is involved in shaping or delivering the work

Key tip: This fund values authentic, community-led approaches—focus less on complex models and more on real stories, trust, and how your work creates belonging and practical support.
