“The future is already here – it’s just not very evenly distributed”, William Gibson

The Internet offers third sector organisations a new platform to raise funds. Developments of the Internet in recent years has allowed fundraisers to use the Internet as a fundraising tool, making use of its ability to interact with users.
And this interaction is key;
“Fail to get a visitor to do something and you may risk loosing them forever”
Sue Fidler
This ability to engage with Internet users is fundamental to successful fundraising online.
This is particularly important as people do not generally visit charity sites to donate. In fact only 1 in 2500 visits to websites are to a charity site.
It is therefore important your site offers the visitor something to do, you need to offer people a reason to visit your site, and for that you need to know what people use the Internet for, and provide these service or activities through your website.
Through building up this relationship you can encourage them to donate money or support through other online giving applications
You also need to know where your supporters are and follow them, be it on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Linkedin etc
There are lots of other reasons that make Internet fundraising a good thing for an organisation to become involved with. (See more)
· It can be cheap or free to do, although there is the potential to spend large amounts of money
· It demonstrates that you are a progressive organisation; embracing new technology and new ways of thinking
· It can provide an unrestricted income
· It requires little effort to maintain once it has been set up
There is also a potentially huge audience out there and the number is growing in addition people are becoming more confident at using / giving via the Internet.
